Does besan brighten skin?
A gentle cleanser and scrub; the 'fairness' claims are unproven.
Provisional — this evidence grade is published but hasn't yet been audited by our reviewers.
Besan works as a mild, gentle cleanser and physical exfoliant — that's the real, modest benefit. The skin-whitening and 'fairness' promises aren't backed by evidence.

What besan actually does
As part of a traditional ubtan, gram flour is a gentle physical exfoliant that also absorbs a little oil, leaving skin feeling smooth and clean. That mild cleansing-and-exfoliating effect is the believable, modest benefit.
What it doesn't do
There's essentially no clinical evidence that besan lightens skin or evens tone. 'Besan for fairness or whitening' is tradition and marketing, not proof. The brighter look after a scrub is removed dead cells and oil — not bleaching.
Does it remove tan or dark spots?
No evidence beyond the temporary fresh-faced look any gentle exfoliation gives. It won't reverse a tan or fade real dark spots.
Cautions
Physical scrubbing can irritate or micro-tear skin if it's too coarse or too frequent, and besan can be drying. Keep it gentle and occasional.
Using it sensibly
As an occasional gentle cleanser or mask — mixed with yoghurt or honey for some moisture — it's low-cost and fine. Don't scrub hard, don't use it daily, and don't expect fairness.
Where it comes from
Traditional · Indian (ubtan).
The honest bottom line
A fine, cheap gentle cleanser and scrub. The 'fairness' it's famous for isn't real — that's removed dead cells, not bleaching.
Common questions
Does besan whiten skin?
There's no good evidence besan lightens skin. It's a gentle cleanser and exfoliant; the brightening you see is removed dead cells and oil, not bleaching.
Can I use besan on my face every day?
Better not — daily scrubbing can irritate and dry skin. A couple of times a week is plenty, and keep it gentle.
Is besan good for oily skin?
It can help absorb some oil and cleanse gently, which oily skin may like. Just don't over-scrub.
Evidence basis: Traditional ubtan use; general dermatology guidance on physical exfoliation; no clinical efficacy data for skin-lightening. Why this is a C.
