Hydration · humectant
Does hyaluronic acid actually hydrate skin?
A genuinely effective surface humectant — for hydration, not structural change.
Provisional — this evidence grade is published but hasn't yet been audited by our reviewers. It was drafted from an automated evidence review.
Hyaluronic acid is a humectant that pulls water into the upper skin and visibly plumps it short-term. That part is real. What it can't do is change skin structurally or work well if you skip the moisturiser on top.

What hyaluronic acid is
Hyaluronic acid (HA) is a humectant — a water-binding molecule that occurs naturally in skin. Topically it sits mostly in the upper layers and holds water there, which is what gives the immediate plumped, smoother look.
What the evidence supports
Short-term surface hydration and a temporary softening of fine lines: well established. It's a dependable hydrating ingredient and pairs well with almost anything.
The humectant catch
A humectant pulls water from wherever it can. In humid air it pulls from the environment; in dry air, applied to dry skin with nothing on top, it can pull from deeper in your skin and leave the surface feeling tighter. Applying to damp skin and sealing with a moisturiser prevents this.
If you're going to use it
Apply to slightly damp skin, follow with moisturiser. Don't expect structural change — that's the job of actives like retinol, or of injectables, which are a different thing entirely.

The honest bottom line
A reliable hydrator if you use it correctly (damp skin, sealed in). Overhyped as an 'anti-ageing' actor — it hydrates, it doesn't rebuild.
Common questions
Does hyaluronic acid get rid of wrinkles?
It temporarily softens the look of fine lines by hydrating and plumping the surface. It doesn't permanently fill wrinkles or rebuild collagen — that's injectable HA or other actives.
Why does my skin feel tighter after using it?
In dry air, HA on dry skin with nothing sealing it can draw water out of deeper skin. Apply to damp skin and lock it in with moisturiser.
