Oil control & tan · traditional remedy

Does multani mitti help oily skin and tan?

CLimited evidence

Soaks up oil for real — but it's temporary and can over-dry.

Provisional — this evidence grade is published but hasn't yet been audited by our reviewers.

Clay genuinely absorbs surface oil, so the fresh, matte feel is real. But it's short-lived, barely studied in proper trials, and overuse dries and irritates.

What it actually does

Multani mitti is a montmorillonite clay, and it genuinely adsorbs sebum and surface oil. That's a real, physical effect — it's why oily skin feels matte and 'clean' afterwards. The fresh feel is not in your head.

What the evidence really is

Modern clinical research on this specific clay is limited. The 'studies' you'll see quoted online are mostly in-vitro or computer-modelling work (a 2025 lab study on enzyme inhibition) or low-quality sources — not proper human trials. The oil absorption is sound; the dramatic claims around it aren't proven.

Does multani mitti remove tan or whiten skin?

Removing oil and dead surface cells can make skin look brighter for a while, but that's not bleaching and it's not de-tanning. A tan is sun-driven pigment deeper in the skin; clay doesn't reverse it. Don't expect whitening.

The downside

It's built for oily skin. On dry or sensitive skin it worsens dryness and can trigger irritation, and letting a mask dry bone-hard actually pulls moisture out of your skin. Once or twice a week is the limit — not daily, not overnight.

Using it sensibly

Oily or combination skin, as a 1–2x/week mask for 10–15 minutes, taken off while still slightly tacky, with a moisturiser after. Skip it if your skin is dry or sensitive.

Where it comes from

Traditional · Indian and South Asian.

The honest bottom line

A pleasant, cheap oil-control mask for oily skin — not a de-tan or whitening treatment, and not for dry or sensitive skin.

Common questions

Does multani mitti remove tan?

It can make skin look temporarily brighter by removing oil and dead cells, but it doesn't reverse a sun tan. Sun protection and time do that.

Can I use multani mitti daily?

No — daily use strips your barrier and can trigger more oil or irritation. Once or twice a week is the sweet spot.

Is multani mitti good for dry skin?

Not really — it's designed to absorb oil, so it tends to worsen dryness. It suits oily and combination skin.
